Bug n Brew is here and better than ever! This year you will have the opportunity to take a class from some of the Northwest’s most innovative steelhead fly tyers. Classes are $50 each or all four at a discount of $180. Following the class, each tyer will give a free presentation on various topics. Some of our presenters will also offer a Spey class the next day following Bug n Brew. Check out the schedule below and get signed up while there’s still room!

All Steelhead Tying Classes and Free Presentations will be held at The Ashland Fly Shop. Spey Clinics will be held at Tou Velle Park on the Rogue River.

Jon Hazlett

In Jon’s class, you will learn to tie his signature flies like the Dirk Wiggler, Deuce Wigalo, and more! He will follow up his class with a presentation on Winter Steelhead Timing, Strategy, and Flies. Want to get your Spey casting tuned up? Check out his Spey clinic following.

Charles St. Pierre

While Charles St. Pierre is best known for his signature patterns like the Hoh Bo Spey fly, CSP is a veteran Kanektok King Salmon fisherman, an Olympic Peninsula steelhead junky, owns Northwest Spey Casting, and is one of the most talented and patient Spey instructors around.

Jay Nicholas

Jay is one of fly-fishing’s resident all-stars. If you haven’t seen one his recently published books like Advanced Intruder Strategies or Intruder Essentials, you have likely seen one of his many tying videos. A retired fish biologist, Jay’s has a fervent passion for Salmon, Steelhead, Sea Bass, Albacore, and every other fish that swims off the Pacific coast. Join Jay Friday night in the shop for a book signing and again for his tying class and presentation Saturday.

1-4 pm: Steelhead Tying Class: Tube Flies ($50)
-Learn to tie steelhead tube flies like Intruders, bunny and marabou leeches, and the Silveynator. These are bread and butter flies that get 'em!

4-6 pm: Tidewater Chinook Flies and Video with Jay Nicholas (Free!)

Jay will be giving away one free book and two or three tube flies to each person who signs up for his tying class!

Jerry French

Jerry French | Ashland Fly Shop | Guide

Jerry French is synonymous with the Intruder. He was one of three who get credit for inventing the fly and the concept behind it. A veteran Northwest steelhead guide, he is most recently known for his contributions to the development of ultra-short Spey shooting heads and the short rods used to deliver them. Join Jerry for his class and presentation Saturday and again for his two-handed class on the water Sunday!

Saturday, April 15

1-4 pm: Steelhead Tying Class: Perfecting Your Composite Loops ($50)
-Learn all the tricks Jerry uses to create consistent and repeatable process when making composite loops. Jerry will teach this method with several Intruder variations. Students will get a fly and a composite loop assembly card.

4-6 pm: The Big Fly and Short Rod Revolution (Free!)
