The Hardy Bougle has been one of the icons of spey fishing over the years. Offering a small arbor with a wider spool design than most reels out there, the Bougle allows for a maximum amount of backing on the reel. I run my 4" with 300 yards of 30lb backing and that leaves enough room for a 600 gr Skagit Line when I need it.

My favorite thing about the 4" reel is the size and weight. Coming in under eight ounces, it makes a really versatile reel. I like it just as much on my 12'6" 6wt as I do on my 12'6" 8wt. It's become my go to reel for swing fishing all year round. And for those that are spooked by the lack of drag, it is true.. the small arbor and lack of drag will lead to a missed opportunity or two. But the drag that can be applied by engaging the screw is significant, and those fish that you do land are even more special because you have to work a bit harder for them.

For me, the Bougle is where good looks meet true performance. This reel is not to be overlooked by those looking for a solid reel for their steelhead needs.

From Hardy:

The first Hardy Bouglé reel was catalogued in 1903, and was, as it remains to this day, a variation on the famous Hardy Perfect reel.

The variation was initially requested by Frenchman Louis Bouglé, an extremely knowledgeable fisherman and tournament caster who requested that Hardy produce a reel with a good line capacity which remained light enough to balance rods between 41/2oz and 8oz.

From this initial request, the Bouglé reel went from strength to strength and became one of the most famous reels in angling history.

This variant of the Bouglé was launched for the reel's 110th birthday in 2013, and we feel is one of the best yet - with its rolling pillar; reversible click check; naval brass bush and spindle; and its hand polished, deep anodised ‘pearl silver' finish. This Bouglé reel is sure to become one of the classics.

Made by time served Hardy Bros. reel makers here in Alnwick, England, this Bouglé reel comes presented in a beautiful, UK made, soft leather, sheepskin lined reel case.
