With longer, more webby fibers than saddle hackles, rooster Schlappen has become a staple in steelhead flies. Around here we use them most commonly for collars on intruders to add a little bulk to the fly. Other common uses are for more webby versions of wooly buggers and an array of trout streamers. You will also see them trailing off of bass poppers or larger saltwater patterns, as the thin stems give them great movement in the water.
